As an author, I know that my readers want to know about the setting, smells, tastes and character’s feelings. I have to pay attention to what my characters are, because Netahs can change from humans to animals. As animals, they react to their world differently than as humans. For instance, when an elk is threatened, it raises its head and stands firm to appear larger. A human might be more inclined to run and hide, climb a tree, or pick up a weapon. That has been fun to work with. It keeps me on my toes.
Another big difference is that some animals have a better sense of smell, eyesight or hearing. Elk noses are sensitive, they can run fast and far, and they can filter out the difference between the movement of small creatures like squirrels and chipmunks versus the slow, sly approach of a mountain lion. These are good survival abilities. Josh is just learning how to change as a Netah in book one. In book two, I’m toying with giving Josh enhanced senses because he is a halfling. Perhaps it will only be one sense, and one that is not very helpful. That would be ironic. Or, I could give him something no other Netah has, and it could be a gamechanger. What to get in on this game? Tell me what kind of spidey sense you think Josh should have. Let’s discuss!
