About Down in the ValleyJosh waits anxiously while the Netah council decides his fate. Will he be accepted as a member of their Netah elk community even though he is a halfling? His ties to the human world, along with his outlaw Netah father, have shrouded Josh in suspicion.
With the council’s approval, he makes a hesitant entry into the community, and marvels at the amazing technology that has allowed the shapeshifters to live in harmony with nature, and away from prying human eyes. But everything is so different from his former life and Josh wonders how he can fit in. He has so much to learn about how to live as a Netah, and very few of his housemates seem willing to share their knowledge with him. Luckily, he finds a few friends who are brave enough to support him on his journey, and they warn him that his father appears intent on making contact with Josh. As he learns about the Netah ways and what role he can play in his new world, he can’t stop thinking about the missing piece of the puzzle in his life, his birth father. Josh is torn by the need to know about his roots, and the dangerous killer his father appears to be. |
Reviews
I loved this sequel to The Netahs: Into the Wilderness…! I was completely wrapped up in the fantasy world, and was rooting for Josh and his Netah community, all animal shape-shifters but with very relatable t(w)een problems. The story picks up where the first left off, with Josh now deep into the Netah community and trying to find his place as a half-human. Add the complication of his outlaw Netah father and we have Josh torn in different directions, all while trying to figure out who he is as a halfling. I can see kid readers strongly identifying with Josh all while getting lost in the Netah world. The plot moves quickly, which had me forget about time as I read. This series is one I’ll be recommending for younger YA readers, which can be hard to find books for. Perfect for fans of Rick Riordan books and the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, The Netahs series is going to appeal to reluctant and avid readers alike. Highly recommend it!” - Fleur Bradley, award-winning author of Midnight at the Barclay Hotel and Daybreak on Raven Island
An incredibly intriguing coming-of-age story, The Netah’s, Down in the Valley, book 2, focuses on the continuing journey of Josh as he navigates his way through the exciting world of the Netahs; shifters who can change between human and animal form. Josh joins a Netah Elk village that accepts him as he learns about life in Netah society and about his volatile family history. My favorite thing about this book is that Josh doesn’t take everything at face value. Like every preteen he questions boundaries while struggling with his emotions. The story moves at a good pace with fresh world-building. I almost believed that if I hiked out into the mountains of Colorado, I could possibly stumble upon something fantastic. I feel like this story would be super great for pre-teens, as they can experience the wilderness through the eyes of local wildlife and a modern teen. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 3!" - Katherine Aman, International Teaching Professional, Cercedilla, Spain
Lisa Cobb’s sequel, The Netahs, Down in the Valley, sweeps readers into a world that seamlessly blends humanity with wildlife. The Netahs› gift of transforming from their human to their animal form requires them to exist in a secret society. When Josh is discovered as half-Netah, he’s swept away from everything he knows and forced into a new life, the Netah way of life. With beautiful imagery and a dynamic cast of characters, this enchanting tale explores the meaning of family, belonging, and change. After reading this book, I will not look at an elk, a fox, or a skunk without considering bigger possibilities and other ways of being." - Jessica Speer, Award-winning author of BFF or NRF (Not Really Friends), Middle School - Safety Goggles Advised, and The Phone Book
